Volunteer Training

Education is the key...action is the answer!

Basic TrainingAs a volunteer for Wolf Bay Watershed Watch you will learn far more than how to monitor water quality. WBWW volunteers are interested in and learn about all of the factors which influence water quality. They also learn how to effectively communicate the environmental impacts of the decisions we make to the citizens of Alabama and Baldwin County.

WBWW volunteers have identified the following topics as some of the most important for further discussion by all stakeholders in the watershed:

Watershed Development

How can the Wolf Bay watershed be conserved under the pressure of rapid population growth?

Who plans watershed development and what additional information is needed?

Sewage Overflows and Animal Wastes

How can wastewater treatment plants be designed to handle sewage treatment in the watershed?

How can livestock wastes be contained and treated on-site?

What are the sources of excess nutrients, organic matter and E. coli that degrade the water quality?

SedimentationWater Clarity

How can BMPs for dirt roads and contruction sites be implemented to prevent erosion and sedimentation of the streams and bay?

How can degraded streams be restored?

Habitat Alteration and Loss

How can invasive species (e.g. popcorn trees) be prevented from replacing native plant communities?

How can wetlands be more appreciated and conserved?

How can streamside buffer zones be expanded to protect water quality?

Stakeholder Action

How can policy makers and the public be made aware of the condition and changes in Wolf Bay?

How can concerned citizens use the media and other means for greater community outreach?

How can citizens have a greater role in the protection and management of the bay?
